Take a piece of metal/wire and jump the solenoid terminals or just touch the battery cable to the starter cable together , if the starter works you need a new stater solenoid. If the starter is turning over but the engine is not, you need a new starter one way clutch and the gear it grabs inside the motor. Oct 15, 2010 • 1999 Suzuki SV 650. Re: Starter won't stop cranking! Common problem with starter solenoid that is worn out the copper washer that connects two stud contacts when coil is energized pitts from high starting current over time more irregular surface welds together. washer can spin with armature to make work sometimes but yours sounds like it needs replaced. This continuous power to the starter can cause it not to disengage. To make sure it's not the solenoid; check the power on the posts behind the solenoid by testing the wire coming from the ignition switch, using a voltmeter. It should indicate zero. If it shows you have power, this may be the reason your solenoid is stay continuously engaged.

You can here the starter start spinning. Is it supposed to do that ?. Without testing where the power is stopping or not stopping; it can be at any point along the electrical path and there may be more than one fault at times, to be detected. An ongoing starter running problem is the heavey copper contacts have burnt closed and are so carbon burned that they are no longer reliable. When I try to start the truck sometimes the starter won't stop spinning. I have to take the battery cable off to stop it. And sometimes it won't do anything when I try to start it and have to jump across the solenoid to start it. I have replaced the solenoid and still the same thing. I thinking a bad ignition switch? Truck is an 88 F150 4x4.

The solenoid then kicks out and supplies power to the starter. When the solenoid gets stuck the starter stays engaged and keeps spinning on its own, when that happens its drawing power directly from the battery not the ignition switch. I wouldnt say its common, but ive seen it happen more that a few times. 6 Cylinder Engines - starter wont stop spinning - ive replaced my solenoid for my starter 17 times from different parts stores around town. my next guess is its the starter but i dont want to spend the extra money on one if its not the problem. ive been wondering if having 2 silenoids would do any thing i now have a.

If you plug in the wiring to the starter switch and the starter starts spinning without you pressing the button, it means the switch is stuck. It's acting like you're holding the button when really you're not. Try shooting some WD-40 into it and tapping it a bit to see if you can get it freed up. If that doesn't work, look for a replacement. The most common reason a starter is not engaging is low battery voltage or a faulty starter motor solenoid. It can also be caused by faulty internal parts of the starter motor like the plunger or pinion gear. There could be many other reasons causing your starter not to engage properly, but mainly there is an internal issue with the starter motor. Starter/solenoid update Well, I picked up a new starter solenoid from NAPA and not AutoZone. Once installed, I started it up and the starter again seemed to spin or sounded like it was still spinning for about two to three seconds. It definitely did not sound as bad as it did with the last solenoid.

Inserted key to start engine. All I got was a winding noise. took the starter to Advanced auto, they found the seleniod was bad. put a a new used rebuilt starter would not stop cranking. Checked my connections to see if I had wires touching, all good. Took new starter back to Advanced auto machine said stater was good. To diagnose the problem, first try rotating the lock cylinder. If the starter motor stops, you've found the problem. Try lubricating the lock cylinder with a liquid graphite solution or spray dry Teflon lube. NO OTHER LUBE IS allowed. WD-40, spray silicone, or any other type of all-purpose lube will JUST MAKE THE PROBLEM WORSE. To isolate whether it's the PDC, disconnect it. If the starter still cranks when you connect the battery, you have a short of the brown wire to positive in the loom somewhere between the PDC and starter. If it does not when you disconnect the PDC, then you may have a short inside the PDC or at the connectors. D.

Starter spins but doesn't engage. Clicking sound you hear it spinning with a click sound before it starts spinning. No grinding sound. The mechanism to engage the flywheel is faulty, probably it is seized, or battery doesn't have enough power to make the solenoid fully pull the mechanism (check battery charge). Tonight, I tried starting the bike using the starter, but when it started I couldn't stop the starter from spinning. I even turned the ignition off and it kept spinning. I had to take the ground off the battery to stop the starter. If I reattach the ground to the battery, the starter starts spinning the engine even if the ignition switch is off.

. There is no solenoid on an '89 starter, and the Bendix IS the gear; it's not what makes the gear move out. (phone app link) If that style of starter spins without driving the ring gear, the Bendix has probably failed. It's not something a bench test will detect. Buy a better starter - I prefer MotorCraft, if you can find one. To fix a starter motor which is not engaging - First, you should Tighten the mounting bolts If the mounting bolt is not tight then the starter drive will not engage properly. After that Check the pinion gear. At last, you should try moving your pinion gears. Will A Starter Spin If The Solenoid Is Bad?.

Remove the starter motor and set your transmission gear to neutral. Rotate the crankshaft manually using a ratchet. There is a pulley at the front or bottom of your engine block. The pulley should move as you watch how the pion gears are reacting. If the gear teeth have damage, you will need to replace the flywheel. The Starter Solenoid.

You need a test light on the starter terminal when it won't start. Attempt the start and if the light comes on, but the motor doesn't, the motor is defective. In that case, remove the starter from the engine and inspect each brush located at the opposite end from the drive for excess wear or weak spring tension that holds the brush in place. When the ignition switch is opened (after engine start-up), contact P1 opens, and the starter motor disengages and stops. The drive pinion is pulled out of engagement with the flywheel by the return spring in the main solenoid. Click to expand... If the drive gear moves freely on the starter shaft then the problem is the starter motor is not spinning up to speed quick enough to screw the drive up the shaft. Usually this is caused by a poor connection, both ends of all cables must be clean, bright, and tight. Discussion Starter · #12 · Aug 21, 2013 (Edited) Yes and yes. Both motors spin fine with pull start. Both are completely assembled and mounted back in the frames. The wreck is 95% back together, was going to run it around on the farm to break in rings. Only thing I can think of is I got the starter gears in wrong.

Re: Starter doesn't stop when engine starts Presumably reading the voltage at the starter will only confirm that +12 is present since the known result is a spinning starter motor. An " electrically" stuck starter is a consequence of something upstream since it's energy comes from a switched+12v supply. there are but very few possibilities. New motor i'm building, sbc 350, did a complete overhaul to the starter too, I've replaced the solenoid with a new unit, put everything back in the truck. Tried to crank the engine for the first time, carb is still on the shelf and ignition wire from coil to distributor is off. The starter came alive. crank the engine but did not stop spinning. The latest the starter wont stop spinning, and now the car has no power at all and wont take a jump start. All I have to do is turn the battery switch on and the starter starts running. Heres what i did so far after searchng through some threads. Replaced the solenoid with a cheapo, after getting the starter bench tested and finding nothing was.
